The Environment in Islam

In Islam, the environment is regarded as a divine trust (amānah) and a sign of Allah’s creation. The Qur’an calls on believers to reflect on the natural world, to act justly towards all living things, and to avoid excess and corruption on the Earth. As caretakers of this planet, we are accountable for how we use and protect its resources.

Prophetic teachings encourage moderation, cleanliness, tree planting, and compassion towards animals and ecosystems. Environmental responsibility is therefore not a modern trend, but a timeless principle rooted in our spiritual beliefs.

Our Environmental Commitments

At the Islamic Cultural Centre & London Central Mosque (ICCUK), we recognise the responsibility entrusted to us as stewards (khalifah) of the Earth. Caring for the environment is not only a social obligation but a spiritual duty rooted in the teachings of Islam, which calls for balance, sustainability, and preservation of natural resources for future generations.

In line with these principles, ICCUK is proud to be an official signatory of the Sustainable City Charter (SCC). By joining this important initiative, we have pledged to work collaboratively with Westminster City Council and local partners to reduce our environmental impact, support a low-carbon future, and promote environmental awareness across our community.

As part of this commitment, we have developed a new Environmental Policy — launching soon — which sets out our sustainability goals and the actions we will take to implement them across our site and services.

Recent steps taken by ICCUK to reduce our carbon footprint include:

  • Phasing out single-use plastics from events, services, and internal operations;
  • Introducing recycling procedures across the mosque site to reduce waste and promote a circular economy;
  • Conducting feasibility studies to assess opportunities for reducing energy use and improving efficiency across our building systems;
  • Upgrading lighting and reviewing heating systems to explore greener alternatives;
  • Encouraging environmental education through Friday sermons, youth activities, and community workshops.

These efforts mark the beginning of a long-term journey toward embedding sustainability into every aspect of our organisation. We aim to lead by example, working closely with Westminster Council, our congregation and networks and wider communities' to build a more just, resilient, and environmentally responsible future.
